Bespoke Golf in Portugal

A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to go on golf tour to Portugal. We stayed for 4 nights and played 5 rounds with one extra hole thrown in to make a total of 100 holes of golf in the week!

Barrington Ayre Bespoke Golf

This not only gave me the perfect opportunity to take the new range of Barrington Ayre Bespoke Golf wear out to warmer climes, it also gave me chance to talk to clubs and players in Portugal about our range and what they wanted to see on their members and what their members would like to wear.

Luckily, the range got a huge thumbs up! the feed back also gave us some interesting new ideas that we are working on at the moment.

Being out in Portugal gave me my first chance to test the new technical bespoke polo shirts that we make. The fabric is designed to not only whick any moisture away from the body but also to move with the body whilst swinging to help improve your swing.

I have to say that I was even more impressed with the fabric than I thought I would be! When the sun did come out it kept me nice and cool and felt very light and comfortable at all times. It also never seemed to smell! There were times when I was a little bit warm after deciding to carry my clubs on one of the hilliest courses I’ve played for a while! The stiff interlined collar stayed nice and strong and smart even after a few washes and I even risked the hotel laundry just to give one of the polos a real hard test! No shrinkage and the collar stayed firm and smart even without the collar stiffeners in. The colours were a real hit and a few people I spoke to wanted me to design some for their touring party for next year!

The ventile trousers were not only amazing over here in the wet weather, they were light and breathable in the warmer weather and held their crease and look even after all of the travel.

One of the things that did come up though was how interested people were in the gilet that I was wearing. This was designed simply to be a promotional piece of clothing that would also allow me to wear it and play golf in when the weather got a bit cooler. However, everywhere I went, people asked me about it and lots of people asked me wear they could buy it from. So we are in the middle of developing a Barrington Ayre Bespoke Golf gilet that will be weatherproof that will be available to purchase.

We are now able to make your bespoke golf clothing and the new website will be ready soon, but in the meantime please use this link to purchase your bespoke golf clothing – Barrington Ayre Bespoke Golf

Tweed Ski Suit

Posted by barringtonayre in bespoke tweed suit - (0 Comments)

We were recently asked to make a bespoke tweed ski suit for a customer and this blog takes a look at the result!

The brief was to design something that was very classical but something that would still be practical on the slopes. This was a brilliant thing to be asked to make and was real fun to design.

We went with a 16oz tweed in a very English pattern and tried to keep the design as classical and as near a traditional tweed suit as possible.

We tried to keep the look of a classic tweed jacket as much as we could with 3 buttons. We then added a button opposite the lapel hole, underneath the lapel so that it can’t be seen, that can be done up like a storm collar when the wind is coming in and the temperature is dropping. (see picture below)

We then also went for a patch pocket look but made each one of these with a zip fastener so that you can have your hip flask, wallet, nibbles, and ski pass all close to hand but secure. The breast zip pocket is also designed to allow you to attach your ski pass by a pull cord to your lapel hole and then tuck in into your breast pocket, zip it up to keep it secure but with the large zip that you can easily undo with your ski gloves on.

We have deliberately used a slightly larger zip on each pocket so that you can undo any of them whilst wearing your gloves. They are also of the strongest quality just in case you do take a tumble!

To allow the wearer the freedom of arm movement so important whilst skiing, we have gone back again to tradition and used classic working shoulder pleats. We use these on our shooting jackets to allow room when moving through a target with your gun up in your shoulder. The same principal is used for arm movement whilst skiing, so when in the tuck position or whilst carving the wearer won’t feel constricted.

We then looked at the areas where you are likely to get warm and perspire and this took our next design feature to the under arm! We took inspiration from the jacket we recently made the Turner Twins for their epic adventure up Mt Elbrus. The under arm can become very warm if there is not movement and space available but this can be quite tricky without creating an odd look to the lines of the jacket. Therefore we went with our explorer jacket armpit and added a small V under the armpit allowing movement and space inside for air to circulate cutting down on perspiration.

We also opted for no vents at the back to prevent snow and cold wind sneaking in and the back is slightly longer like a traditional snowboarders jacket, and with tweed being such a great fabric for all weathers the wearer will not get a soggy bottom!

In regard to internal pockets we went with one zip fastening for wallet, phone or anything else that the wearer would like to keep secure and on the left hand side we went with a classic open internal pocket so the wearer even with gloves on can reach in by undoing a single button and the front and retrieving a hip flask, piste map or pack of cigarettes whilst on a chair lift with minimal fuss.

With the trousers we again went for practicality whilst keeping that classic tweed suit look. We took the fishtail back to a new level by removing the waistband altogether and simply took the fishtail right up the back to prevent any snow or cold air from sneaking in. The lack of waistband also makes the trousers incredibly comfortable when sitting down for lunch or on a chair lift as there is no heavy band to push into the lower back. The lack of waistband also allows for more movement when skiing. We did add a zip rear pocket just in case you needed somewhere safe to keep your wallet apres ski when the jacket comes off!

For the front of the trouser we went with strength and comfort and so used a double button fastening and zip fly. The double button allows for lots of movement and exertion whilst staying fastened and the zip fly prevents any wind from getting its icy reach on what is the most delicate of areas!

The cuffs of the the trouser are also wider and in a more boot cut finish to allow for easy wear over a ski boot and the waterproof breathable lining throughout the suit makes this the most stylish ski suit you will ever see.

As with all of our clothing this tweed ski suit is made right here in England and can be adapted to your own design and measurements and you can pick your own tweed to truly be an individual on the slopes.

The owner of the suit has promised to take photos of himself wearing it when he is skiing and let us know exactly what he thought of it. So keep an eye out for his report coming very soon

Bespoke Golf

We are delighted to announce that we will shortly be launching a dedicated bespoke golf range. Not only will this clothing range be made to the highest tailoring standards as with all of our bespoke clothing, but they will also be made from a special range of technical clothing to not only make the player look good, but the clothing will help their game.

As with all of our new fabrics and clothing ranges, we at Barrington Ayre try them out to make sure that they do what they are supposed to do!

Therefore on Monday, I took the new bespoke Ventile® cotton trousers, one of our 100% cotton pique bespoke polo shirts, one of the new bobble hats, a piece of Armadillo Merino next to the skin clothing and a proto type of our new technical 3 layer soft shell jacket out on the golf course. The weather was suitably poor and we had cold winds first thing in the morning, rain and strong winds during the day and even a spot of sun at one point! but it all proved rather useful in assessing the clothing.

We played 27 holes at Frilforth Heath golf course in Abingdon. A lovely old school course, with tight fairways, lots of gorse bushes, a great range of challenges and a lovely atmosphere in the Club House.

So lets start at the top!IMG_4145

The Bobble hat – This kept my head nice and warm when we arrived in the biting cold wind and kept me warm and dry throughout the day without making me sweat, which was a real bonus for a wooly hat. The colours we have produced went down well with the chaps I played with and a couple ordered one there and then.

The Armadillo Merino – next to skin layer – We have started a collaboration with Armadillo Merino to provide our next to skin layers. They are real experts in the field and their clothing is used by the Armed Forces, Special Forces and the Fire service as well as many extreme sportsmen and women. I have to admit that after using merino wool in some of our suits and being a great fan and official supplier of John Smedley, I was slightly sceptical of how merino wool would work close up to the skin. But I have to say that it really is truly amazing! It kept me warm when we first started and after having a few shocking holes and getting rather angry and hot it seemed to whick the heat and seat away from my body. It also didn’t itch at all and after wearing it all day I had to give it the sniff test at the end of the day, as it is claimed that you can wear it for 365 days without washing it! and there wasn’t even the slightest hint of an odour. These layers are great.

The Bespoke Polo Shirt – I went for a classic 100% cotton pique polo this time but we have made some polos in a selection of special technical fabrics that keep the wearer warm on colder days but also whick away sweat and heat from the body when it is warmer. They are also all designed to move with the player and aid them in their swing. Our bespoke polo shirts are designed with a classic shirt collar feel, so there is a proper collar band and we have interlined the collar to keep them firm and rigid so that they stay smart whilst looking good. The polo shirt that I wore worked extremely well and the staff in the Clubhouse even commented on how nice it was to see a polo shirt with a proper collar for once.

Screenshot 2015-11-30 10.02.50

Merino Jumper – This is one of our new British made 100% merino jumpers. They are designed to be extremely hard wearing, machine washable and have hand linked seams to increase comfort. Due to being merino they are not as bulky as a wool jumper so fit beautifully under a coat if you need. This jumper added to keeping me warm and was incredibly comfortable as well as looking great in the bar afterwards!

Ventile® cotton trousers – Now these really are amazing! They are 100% cotton trousers, they look and feel like cotton but are weather and waterproof so there is no need to have waterproof trousers in your bag anymore. The chaps I was playing with were rather sceptical but after I showed them what happens when you put water on the trousers they were obsessed! (have a look at the video below) We even managed to go through a whole bottle of water throwing them it on my trousers before we even tee’d off! The special Ventile® fabric expands when water comes in contact with it and so repels water completely. We experienced quite a bit of rain on the way round and whilst the other guys were pulling on their waterproof trousers I was kept dry and comfortable. They even kept out the howling wind. I have to say these are amazing and I am definitely going to get some more made simply as winter weather trousers.

Screenshot 2015-12-23 16.47.28

Three layer soft shell jacket – This was a photo type for our new three layer soft shell jackets. This was a great addition and kept the wind and rain off my throughout the day as well as keeping me warm. There are a few little tweaks that I will be making to make it even better but all in all these will be a cracking addition to the range

So I have to say that the field test for our new bespoke golf range was incredibly successful, unlike my golf! I had lots of movement available to me, I stayed dry and warm and I was simply astonished about how well the trousers worked.

We have a special offer online at the moment for a whole golf outfit – but if you would like to come and see the range for yourself, please contact us on 01285 689431 or by emailing Kerry –
